Peace Arrow — “Gems”

The luft air between Mitch’s vocals and every bit of instrumentation/organic-samples provided becomes an insanely recognizable production on Peace Arrow’s debut single. Even more so at times, it’s an almost Avey Tare added feel where Mitch Myers has previously found with the results from his other Gainesville project, Hear Hums.

The two percussion-wielding Gainesvillites actually set out for FMLY Fest several days ago without a single drum. Instead, Kenzie brought along a xylophone, a bow, and a few toy melodies. With Mitch on his guitar and much more added vocals present, you could see Peace Arrow’s solemn existence before it was even properly born. Its presence is clearly here now and I wouldn’t skip a beat on hitting the play button for the project’s only track.

Hear Hums — “Toad Licking”

Lots of new things have fallen into place since Hear Hums have come back from their East Coast tour. While the two have pushed back their release of Opens, its entire static anticipation is still there. The production is being much more emphasized with this release and it should be exciting to hear the different experimental layers unfold from the mastering process that’s going on around this time.

In the meantime, Hear Hums have sent along a new song they’ve been working on for the Sample Based Life Vol. 2 collection. This will be curated by Sumsun, who will provide a bank of various sounds for other musicians & bands to choose from to create their piece. If you haven’t heard about the magic that’s behind this idea, you’ll want to check out Volume 1.

For now though, take in “Toad Licking” and its sporadic vocal samples that build up to an amazing choir of vocals & whispers / various sounds; it’s really wonderful.

[RECOMMENDED SHOW] It’s been a while since my last visit to Will’s Pub, but fitting enough, the last time I was there I got to see Hear Hums, themselves, as they began their tour up the East Coast. To finish off the tour, the duo is set to open for another Gainesville-tied psychedelic duo; Prince Rama. You couldn’t draw up a more ample lineup, as Dark Sea of Awareness and Alien House join the party to showcase more jams among the freshly face-painted crowd. No, really Tiny Waves setup a face painting stand for the occasion! Hope that’s enough to convince you! [Facebook Event]

Beautifully done interview with Gainsville-duo; Hear Hums. The two are actually getting ready to tour the East Coast again. Tiny Waves has got it covered here and if you scroll all the way towards the end, you can see a very exciting Nov. 30th Prince Rama show listed.

[RECOMMENDED SHOW] Tonight’s Parafora Presents showcase includes; the experimental psych-folk vibes from Woodsman, Hear Hums’ atmosphere-driven psychedelic swirls, the drone & shoegaze project—Fever—and solo-artist, with a reminiscent Thom Yorke production; Maximino. I expect everyone to be skipping out on other events tonight, especially because this one’s only asking for $5 (!) and has a bunch of rad FL projects. [Guest Post] Too Many Carpets

The growing collective of musicians down in my hometown of Gainesville, Florida never ceases to amaze. There’s a sense of community that’s hard to find nowadays.

With prime acts like, experimental-psych duo Hear Hums , who are set to release their third album this fall, Opens. // Brothers Michael and JT Bringardner go under Michael Parallax and the three-piece Oh Fortuna, respectively, each with unusually crafty live performances. // David Levek, better known as Levek, the multi-instrumentalist whose self-described ‘mickey mouse tribal sounds’ have caught airwaves all over the world.

The list goes on for days. These laid back, high-five vibes have managed to build a series ofBummer-related festivals, two in Gainesville and one in Tallahassee, geared towards showcasing rad acts from local and national up-and-comers.

The next talent set to explode is Levek’s right hand woman; Nicole Miglis.

Marrying her training as a classical pianist and apparent lust for folk, her sound is both enticing and fiery. “Quiet Morning”, her latest demo, plays out like you’re waking up with the rising sun, soothed in warmth, furnished with the building complexities of the coming hours. Word on the street suggests there is an album in the works and might even be releasing within the month. Keep your fingers crossed and stream your daily lulling below along with two folk-driven tracks below.

Hear Hums — “Shrines”

Ooh and speaking of FL bands, Hear Hums have put together some serene water-drifting visuals for their new single, “Shrines”. A perfect pairing for their sound, to be lost within a sea of saturation and just enough content to let you fill in the context with your own imagination. Here’s the Facebook event page for their show with Woodsman (!) and Fever this upcoming Sunday! Oh and read my post on “Shrines” posted earlier this summer here.

Part Four of the Grimes & Doldrums tour takes us through a video diary of their stay in Gainesville before & after their show with Hear Hums, all right before SXSW weekend. One of the many awesome quotes; ”we’re in Florida and they have a big problem in Florida… Alligators, they’re everywhere.”

Hear Hums — “Shrines”

Droned beginnings that soon become percussion led behind an organic setting filled with acoustics of every timbre, as Mitch’s ‘ohs’ & ‘ahs’ accentuate all around nature samples that seem to soak in and add a bit of a wilder Florida environment to it all.

Gainesville duo, Hear Hums, is about as atmosphere-driven as a project gets. I was lucky enough to be able to first come across these two at a show and experience the ethereal nature of their experimental work live. Now, Mitch Myers and Kenzie Cooke, the two behind Hear Hums, have prepared a wonderful third album, Opens, to follow the previous Psyche Cycles. After, several listens of the release, I can easily say it’s their most encompassing release of the three.

Though, the only track available on the internet right now is “Shrines”, but take it as a sampler of good things to come from the rest of Opens. Also, you could catch the Orlando show @ Stardust this Friday for the full experience.
